Are You a Local Business That Did Not Have to Use Social Media in the Good Times !!
When the economy was booming I’ll bet that many local businesses did not take their online presence seriously. Some bought a website that they did not understand how to use to its best advantage and as for social media when local business people had lots of business ……..many were certainly not worried about learning this powerful business tool ??
A LITTLE REALTIME STORY- CAN YOU RELATE TO THIS LOCAL BUSINESSMAN
I am writing this post after having a chat a day or two ago with a landscaper that I personally know and who does excellent work. We discussed his website which he bought when the economy was doing very well. He did not understand how to update it …..or upload anything of use to it…….and quite naturally he did not believe he had got either value or business from this website as he just used it as a reference point…..and a bad one at that.It both amazes me and annoys me how many businesses were sold an expensive pup….worthless almost !!
He basically in reality could not update his site with examples of current work for example….achievements and notable projects done….. etc etc. I asked him if he himself liked to see up to date sites when considering doing business online. Answer ” Yes of course “.
Also I asked him if he was aware that undoubtedly….. his competition were promoting themselves online….through a site or social media, or indeed both ………..and how they would stand out ahead of him in these difficult economic times. He Agreed !!.
We had a further chat about how the economy had changed and how it was affecting how he gets business. As this landscaper is very respected, in the past he would have got a lot of work from main contractors and architects. But these companies have been badly affected by the down turn and he agreed he now needs to think creatively…out of the box… to get business.
I then explained I was well aware there was an active Twitter community in his local area. He agreed that his business could be at a big disadvantage by not using social media when his competition are .
I asked would he like to understand how to reach these people with updates of his business expertise and build a network of targeted people.
I explained that he could use Twitter and Facebook, and You Tube with his mobile phone and his customers could also see his updates on their phones. He thought this was great, agreeing that most people always carry their mobile phone when they are out and about.
Then I explained he could schedule tweets and video and examples of his work could be sent automatically from a You Tube account to show people on Twitter examples of his latest great work for example.
We then discussed how people like photos of beautiful flowers . gardens etc. By using photos for example on Facebook it would be a great way to show his expertise and the value he gives his customers. A Facebook page can also be a great marketing tool and if for example people shared a photo of his work it was like someone recommending him in the offline world.
He also agreed that now is a very important time of the year to be promoting his particular business and I explained he could do this along with his offline marketing skills. He was delighted to hear online and offline can often work well together.
What about sharing landscaping advice and tips to generate more interest in his business….I pondered !
The next thing we discussed is how the majority of people that he does with business with and his customers always have their mobile phones , almost attached to them.I explained for instance that Facebook people use the mobile app and have access to Facebook at all times . Many people never leave their home or business without their mobile phone ……..and are thus reachable using Twitter and Facebook.
THE BOTTOM LINE….AS I SEE IT
My landscaper confirmed his interest and his openness towards learning how to use these tools for his local business …and we agreed a training schedule….HAPPY DAYS FOR ME. Then his Real Fear came out ……. he felt he was not a techie person and how could he manage it all when he would be outside doing a landscaping job.In reality this fear was unfounded, because it was obvious to me from conversation…..that he has the necessary basic computer skills…. and is in fact well able to both do it and manage it , and that he only needs training and advice…………… and with training and application…….. comes confidence and steady real progress.Rome wasn’t built-in a day!!
IT WAS ONLY LATER ON REFLECTION THAT IT STRUCK ME HOW COMMON HIS FEARS MIGHT BE WITH MANY OTHER LOCAL BUSINESS PEOPLE LIKE HIM………Fear Prevents Progress Folks…..Our Businesses can get left behind because of it….Some of us were afraid learning how to drive a car…..But we practiced, Many of us took invaluable training …….And We Succeeded !!!

I love the I am not technical enough excuse! My wife set up my Facebook account, because she did not believe I could do it myself. Now, I have shown hundreds of people how to use Facebook.

Hi Andy,
It is like everything in life we all need to learn and build are confidence. It was the same for me but I was determined to learn and be part of the tech age. Take care Rosemary

I think fear is a huge barrier for many people – it’s often the unknown that makes us this way.
It’s interesting as I don’t class myself as technical in the slightest but I seem to manage reasonably OK on WordPress etc. I remember when I first used Aweber I was so overwhelmed with it all whereas now it’s so easy… I guess it’s also like anything – practice builds confidence:)

Lilach,
I agree with you as I would not consider myself techie at all . But that gives me a great advantage when training clients as I have to put effort into learning new skills. Because of the industry we are in, we have are updating skills all the time and learning new ones. I find I adapt to changes and pick things up as we are always learning new skills to give value to our customers. Take care Rosemary

Hello Rosemary
Your chat with the landscape person is a great example of the most effective sales call. You did not use show and tell, you used dialogue and let him confirm his interest and his openness toward learning how to use social media tools for his local business. The results being you helped him solve his problem. The potential customer always has the answer if we ask good questions.
Thanks

Wow, I DO relate to this Rosemary! Back when I was the director of marketing for our regional aquarium I paid our ad agency to set up a new website for us – of course they wanted to handle EVERYTHING including updates. I told them at least initially I wanted to handle any changes – they did not like that but my account was big bucks for them so they went alone with it. I did that for 2 reasons 1) I wanted to learn what it involved so I’d know what I was paying for, and 2) I wanted to learn for myself. So glad I did for many reasons. I’m not at all surprised at the response you got and have no doubt there are many small business owners out there who are in the same boat.

Hi Marty,
Delighted you shared your experience. Sadly to say there are many people who will take advantage of local business. I was speaking to a colleague a while ago and she was telling me of someone bought a Facebook page and were told they did not need a Google presence. We were both not impressed at this advice as you do not own your Facebook page and are not in control of Facebook changes. When they make changes we need to learn to adapt how to use them. This person was also charged to much money as well. We all need to understand what is the right marketing mix with facebook , twitter for example , google and offline for our businesses. It is very important to work with people who want to help the long term success of our business not the quick buck. All I can say we need to choose wisely. take care Rosemary

Hi Rosemary,
It’s natural someone to be afraid of something new because he doesn’t know how it works. Even basic things like emailing or creating a facebook account might seem difficult to someone who has never used internet as a tool for his/her business and only for just surfing the web.
The simple answer to anyone who is afraid of something new is to take action and practice, only in this way he/she will start feeling confident about what he/she can do…

Hi Kostas,
So true, the more action we take learning new skills how much easier things are even with things changing by
the day in the local business environment. There are such great opportunity’s when we have the skills to find the right target market for our businesses. You are a great example of this yourself. Take care Rosemary

Hi Rosemary, great article – we have converted 2 people this week to try twitter for their local business, its a combination of many things –
lack of knowledge – don’t know what it is, how it can help or how easy it can be to use.
fear – as mentioned in the comments above
and people not challenging themselves – accepting the status quo….
When faced in a corner – business are forced to try different things to survive – its the ones that are constantly trying new things to find new ways of communicating with customers that will come through tough times in a stronger position than those that ‘hang tight’ hoping for the best.
Thanks for sharing this story…a great example of what is happening all around us daily.

Hi Ciaran,
Great to see you here on my blog. So true it is important to be able to adapt . I am delighted to hear you got two new customers and well deserved I see how hard you work and the success you have made of your Facebook Page.
I am finding the people who learn how to use social media are more adaptable to change because we have a wider network of people to give us ideas to compete in these challenging times. But as well we have to be learning all the time as tech changes so often that is also a good thing. A friend of mine sent me a video about Mark Zuckerberg and the think that struck me was how he enjoyed learning.
Take care Rosemary
